Ashley Beerdat is an emerging artist of Guyanese descent who grew up in Brampton, Ontario. She is a graduate from Western University with a specialization in Criminology and Major in Art History and Visual Arts. She is currently an artist in residence at Visual Arts Mississauga with an upcoming show in May 2020 at the Small Arms Inspection Building. Ashley uses painting to narrate mythical stories based on her childhood, dreams and life experiences. The narratives do not follow a specific tale - rather, she treats each painting as an expedition and take bits of information from each in search of hidden meaning. Her stories are created through the process of searching. She never starts knowing how the end result will be, rather she discovers the content as she paints. Ashley integrates stories in a collective space in her search for meaning and understanding how these bits of information form relationships with one another. Her narratives carry a mythological quality by exploring topics such as climate change, evolution or the investigation of an unfamiliar place in her dreams and experiences. Her process entails laying thick globs of paint on the canvas to build up the surface of the image and to place emphasis on the material of the paint itself. Ashley`s work toys with the line between imagination and reality.
